Dancing out of your comfort zone

One word.

Until yesterday I had only demoed/auditioned Zumba instructors, I had never taken a full class before. Don’t get me wrong,  I like to dance. That certainly doesn’t mean I’m any good! I have some rhythm. I can find the beat. But when asked to follow choreography that I didn’t make up, that’s when I run into trouble!
There were about 25 people in last nights class. Relatively normal sized, but it was the room itself that I loved! The instructor was on a platform, he did all the moves mirror image and the room was dimly lit. All the makings for a great class! Most of the music was Latin inspired, some were hip hop, some were pop. By far my favorite is the hip hop remixes! They tend to be a bit slower footwork, but solid movements.
Going into the class I was a little nervous. I stood in the back row and didn’t want others to watch me fail. What I didn’t realize was that NO ONE is looking at you. Everyone is so concerned with their own moves and the teacher, that you could be doing jumping jacks and no one would notice!
Slowly but surely I began to make my way up to the middle of the room. As I became more secure with my surroundings, I started coming out of my shell. I began having fun with this class. It was amazing how fast the class went by when I just began to relax and enjoy myself!
If I can give any advice it is to take that first step. Take that leap of faith. Try something that scares you. Challenge yourself to do something that makes you uncomfortable. If you hate it, good! At least you tried!
But if you for some reason, some small chance, for a millimeter of a second enjoy it… well then that was worth the risk.

Travel trends!

Hey guys! I know I’ve been a bit MIA lately… vacation tends to do that to ya 🙂 While I was away I really go to thinking about how travel impacts many peoples workouts! Many of my clients work as consultants which leaves them traveling 4-5x a week. Thus, I am constantly challenged to tweak their routines to cater to hotel gyms or even hotel rooms!
Just last week while I was in FL, I realized how hard it is to continue your regimen away from your home gym. But as I always say… DON’T make that an excuse to NOT workout. Be creative and utilize your surroundings!

Doing beach yoga in FL! Wheel anyone…

Here are some tips BEFORE travelling:
1.) Research health clubs in the area you are about to travel to. If you are going for business, call the hotel and ask what features they have for fitness. i.e a gym, pool, roof deck track. Even asking them what kinds of machines or equipment they have would be beneficial!

2.) If your hotel doesn’t have a gym or you want to try something different, look into clubs that offer day/week passes! Free trials are a great way to get into a gym without any sort of commitment.

3.) If you are on vacation for pleasure, check out yoga, Spin or other group exercise classes in that area! Again, clubs will usually have class passes or free trials!

4.) Don’t want to spend a dime… great! Check out local hiking trails, bike paths, etc. These are great ways to see the city/town you are visiting on a small budget. Renting a bike is a great way to see the city, get some exercise and spend a minimal amount of $$.

Once you’re there…

1.) Get out there! Start exploring by simply walking around the city or town. You might run into a small, independently owned yoga studio that has minimal promotion but a great environment!

2.) Not a ton of time…. Use your bedroom space to create your own gym! Body weight exercises are a great way to challenge yourself and get in a workout ANY time of the day (or night!).

Most importantly, don’t just throw your exercise routine out the window while on vacation! Even if is a 30min walk, every step counts. It will help you feel stronger, more energized and sleep better!

Here are some great ANYWHERE body weight exercises to try out!

  • Push ups
  • Squats
  • Plank
  • Tricep Dips (off a chair or low table)
  • Walking Lunges
Don’t forget the cardio!
  • Mountain climbers
  • Burpees
  • Squat Jumps
  • Jumping Jacks
Have fun with it and try something new. You’ll be trendy before you know it 🙂
