It’s all about YOU.

It’s ok to be selfish sometimes. Well, let’s call it personal development.

Before befriending others, you have to be your own friend.  Before correcting others, you have to correct yourself.  Before making others happy, you have to make yourself happy.  It’s not called selfishness, it’s called personal development.  Once you balance yourself, only then can you balance the world around you.” source
It’s actually healthy. You need to spend time focusing on yourself or you will never give your best self to others. Think of it this way… If you always give to others and never take time for you, you could end up feeling frustrated, neglected and bitter. If you begin everyday knowing you are a priority, then you’re less likely to feel as if something is missing. This personal development can come by way of material items, activities, even alone time can create more self appreciation.

I thought of writing about this after realizing last year I needed to do more things for me.

#1. I got a membership for a monthly massage. Since I work in the fitness industry I decided to make my body a priority. This gives me a once a month commitment to treating myself, no questions asked.

#2. I bought myself a necklace. I know this seems small and insignificant, but I wear it daily and it’s a constant reminder that I am making an effort to take time for me.

#3. I bake. When I am stressed out, happy, sad or none of the above, I bake. For others or myself it calms me down. It’s a time when I can focus on something other than what’s going on in my life and instead on the ingredients needed.

So whether it’s frosting cupcakes or performing downward dog just remember…

Your needs matter.  If you don’t value yourself, look out for yourself, and stick up for yourself, you’re sabotaging yourself.  Remember, it IS possible to take care of your own needs while simultaneously caring for those around you.  And once your needs are met, you will likely be far more capable of helping those who need you most.” source
