After the final fireworks lit up the Boston skyline and BBQ’s began to fizzle out, I knew that meant my first studio review was approaching!
I received an email from The Studio Empower about coming in to do a review of a class. I didn’t know much about the facility, so I quickly did some research. Thank you Google.
The Studio Empower:
“The Studio Empower offers an innovative and dynamic workout designed by LA Celebrity trainer and fitness guru, Sebastien Lagree. Lagree Fitness ™ (formerly, SPX Fitness or best known as Pilates Plus) incorporates the basic principles of traditional Pilates but has transformed itself into a high intensity, low impact workout using strength training – allowing for all fitness levels to achieve sculpted and toned physiques quickly and safely.” source
Located in Newton, MA, the studio is only about 20min away from my house. Easy breezy! I had emailed regarding parking and was told there was ample street spots with meters.
Once you live in a city where parking is at a premium, you come to be very familiar with asking this question.
I have to say I was a little nervous about my first class at Empower. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you know I am a Spin instructor, teach bootcamps and personal train. Never have I listed “Mind/Body” as one of my strengths. BUT, I am always telling people to go try new classes, so here I go practicing what I preach.
Or at least attempting.
I walked in around 8:55AM for the 9AM class. The place was bustling! I thought for sure being the day after a holiday it would be quiet. Wrong. I was greeted right away by our uber friendly instructor, Eliza
. She had me fill out a waiver and asked me if I had ever used a Megaformer before.
A Megaformer (M3) is as if “Lamborghini and a Pilates reformer had a child”. But really. These things are massive and look like they are worth more than my car. Which they probably are since I drive an ’02 Camry. Anyways, I digress. If you’ve ever worked out on a reformer before you know they are based off a spring system that allows you to drop/add resistance with a quick “spring change”.
Now back to the class.
We got set up on these machines and immediately began warming up with some core exercises incorporating the M3. We weren’t even 10min in and my abs were on fire! I slowly felt my heart rate rising and body start to warm up. From lower body lunges to bicep curls using the attached straps, these machines don’t miss a trick.
Eliza kept us constantly moving and switched it up between slow controlled motions and isometric holds. Her high energy teaching style motivated me to keep hustling and not give up. Even if my quads were shaking and glutes were fatiguing.
Burn baby, burn.
The class was 45min. And I was a puddle afterwards. I honestly didn’t think it was going to be as difficult as it was! This class can definitely be altered for different fitness levels, but I do believe it helps to have some sort of body awareness going into it. I mean, after all you are on a moving platform.
After class was over I got to grab a quick pic with Eliza before heading out!
