Dear Willpower, I don’t believe we’ve met.

But seriously. This is something that I’ve recognized I need to work on.

Back in August I decided to really test this poor habit of mine with a month off from drinking. I called it anti-alcohol August.

Before you get your knickers in a twist, I still maintained a relatively busy social schedule and took my vacation up to Maine.

Many people called me dumb for banning the bottle during a summer month, but for me it seemed perfect! No weddings, birthdays or BBQ bashes, just plain and simple virgin fun.

I decided to stick with a plan. Up first was accountability. I told all my friends and family that I was planning on drying out for the next month. Not for any addictive purposes, but simply to strengthen my willpower. This kind of accountability came in handy during times when those friends and family were around. They knew my goals and most of them didn’t try to derail me 😉

Secondly, I had to have a back up plan. Flavored seltzer was my go-to. I could easily crack that cold one and enjoy it after work instead of a brewski. Was it the same? Of course not. But it certainly did the trick when I needed it.

Lastly, I had to set an end goal. For me, I had a comedy show the final night in August. I had a night I was looking forward to celebrating with friends and a glass of wine.

Let me just say, it was hard. I think sometimes when you tell yourself you can’t have something, it makes you want it that much more! I’m really happy I decided to challenge myself to anti-alcohol August. I’m pretty sure Lindt and Hershey’s sales skyrocketed, but it was worth it.
Have you ever tested your willpower? Maybe cleansed the system of something; dairy, gluten, alcohol?  How did you do? And better yet, how did you feel afterwards?
I found myself at the same weight (although, this is NOT why I did it), same alcohol tolerance (cheap date) and same exercise recovery (more to the reason why I did it).
Bottom line: Glad I tried it. May do it again in 2014. Now let me enjoy my glass of house red.
