On Wednesday, as I was coming home on the bus from a long day at work, I was torn with the thought of heading to the gym or jumping into my sweats. It would be a tight timeframe, but I knew there was a 7 p.m. class I could make.
As the bus was growing closer to my stop, I realized just how many excuses I had been making recently about exercise. I was tired. It was late. I was hungry. The list goes on. But, in this instance, this fork in the road, I knew I had to make a decision that I wouldn’t regret.
I got off the bus, immediately got into my car and started the engine. Running into my house for less than 5 minutes, I changed, dropped my work bag and grabbed my yoga mat.
I made the decision to commit to my practice.
And I am so happy I did.
Laying in savasana after an hour of hot, sweaty, difficult poses, I was not only proud of my commitment to my health, but also felt like my body needed it. As I’ve recently mentioned, leaving my gym job for the desk-type, has left me a bit ‘knotted’.
From sitting all day to typing and trying not to slouch, I’ve found my upper back area to be outrageously tight. But after some downward dogs and triangle poses, I was feeling limber and agile.
I’m thinking this kind of practice needs to be a part of my life more. Just like grabbing a drink with friends or going to a work event, I must make time for me and my mat. There truly is nothing like that feeling of accomplishment. I’d like to feel it more often.
